Gestalt Therapy
While talking about our problems can be helpful, it can become a way to avoid fully confronting how these problems affect us.
Sometimes, we complain,
so we don’t have to feel.
Gestalt therapy is a type of counseling that focuses on helping people become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment
How It Works
In gestalt therapy, clients are encouraged to explore how they experience the world in the “here and now”, instead of talking about “there and then”.
The therapist often uses creative techniques, like role-playing or exercises that involve acting out feelings, to help the client understand themselves better. The goal is to shift from simply talking about problems to fully experiencing how those problems impact them (e.g., stop talking about anger and the people that make them angry, and start feeling their anger).
Paradoxically, it is through this process of experiencing that we change.
